Project Snapshot
PROBLEM
Learning game design can be overwhelming due to the large number of scattered resources, most of them available only in English and often disconnected from practical application.
SOLUTION
An ongoing educational practice combining formal studies, original publications, online courses, and in-person workshops to organize, contextualize, and teach game design fundamentals in an accessible way.
RESULT
A body of educational work that bridges theory and practice, making game design knowledge more approachable for students, designers, and creators from different backgrounds.
My Contribution
Authored a 180-page game design e-book synthesizing knowledge from over 20 foundational books and academic sources
Developed and published a complete online game design course with more than 300 enrolled students
Designed and taught a two-month interdisciplinary workshop at the National Center of Arts (CNA)
Led a seminar on Game Studies as part of the LEIVA program at the National Center of Arts (CNA)
Completed a Master of Science in Digital Games, focusing on research and critical analysis

< >
Educational content grounded in established design frameworks (MDA, Four Elements, FDD)
< >
All referenced material properly credited and cited in corresponding sections
< >
Original analytical model proposed to study and discuss game design concepts
Impact
Educational materials used by students and aspiring designers to understand game design fundamentals
Workshops and courses helped participants connect theory with hands-on experimentation
Academic background supported cultural and research-based projects in museums and interactive installations
Learnings
Writing and structuring the e-book reinforced the importance of synthesis in education. Organizing dispersed knowledge into a single, coherent resource made complex concepts easier to understand and apply, especially for Spanish-speaking audiences.
Teaching through workshops and online courses showed that learning game design is most effective when theory and practice evolve together. Allowing students to experiment while reflecting on design principles led to deeper understanding.
Academic research, particularly the study of the prehispanic game Patolli, strengthened my interest in games as cultural artifacts. This work highlighted how traditional and historical games can inform contemporary game design and player experience.
